— Netflix kicks off German Film Slate with three Original Features–
Amsterdam/Berlin, Germany – February 8, 2019 — Netflix, the world’s leading internet entertainment service, has announced the production of the first three German film projects, bringing together both local breakthrough talent and established film powerhouses.
Kai Finke, Director Content Acquisitions and Co-Productions DACH at Netflix, confirmed the development of fast-paced fraudster satire Betongold with David Kross, Frederick Lau and Janina Uhse , young adult romcom Isi & Ossi starring Lisa Vicari and Dennis Mojen and the supernatural social drama Freaks with Tim Oliver Schultz. The films commence production in spring 2019 and will be released globally on Netflix from 2020.
Kai Finke about the three acquired films: “Hoping to drive joy for our members in Germany and beyond, we are very excited to kick off the production of exclusive German films with three very different projects. It’s especially thrilling for us to work with an exceptional group of artists, unconventional filmmakers and great producers on this slate of movies.”
In Betongold/Concrete Gold (WT), two young con artists are spiraling into an absurd chaos of lies and deceit within Berlin’s insane real estate bubble. The lives of Isi & Ossi could not be more different, which makes them a perfect team to pursue their dreams – or does it? Working-class mom Wendy rediscovers her hidden talents and builds a dysfunctional superhero team in Freaks.
Cüneyt Kaya, writer and director of Concrete Gold: “We’ll surprise our viewers with absurd humor, quick wit and captivating characters. Our con men spiral between high flying riches and rock-bottom rags. Netflix and UFA give me the opportunity of complete creative freedom for a film we can bring to a global audience. This is extremely bold and groundbreaking for an uncompromising film like Concrete Gold. I am incredibly happy to realize my dream project with the perfect cast.”
Oliver Kienle, writer/director of Isi & Ossi, asks: “Is there anything more exciting and disturbing than the passage from teenager to young adulthood? It is all about our interactions with our parents and our upbringing, and I am very intrigued about our unlikely match that becomes a perfect one – or not. I can’t wait to dive into the world of Isi & Ossi, and I am so happy about teaming up with Netflix and X Filme to bring this uniquely German but also universal story to the world.”
Freaks-director Felix Bilder adds, “only Netflix would produce a genre-bending project like this. They shared our enthusiasm for this extraordinary story immediately, and I am glad to have found a home for Freaks here to tell an unexpected superhero story from Germany. German public broadcaster ZDF has also been involved into the development at a very early stage. Now we have two strong partners to realize the bold and unafraid approach of this book.”
