Review: Captain Marvel (2019)

Captain Marvel is the first movie in the Marvel Cinematic Universe featuring a superheroine, Carol Danvers.  During the movie we are introduced to the Kree, the Skrulls, a younger version of Nick Fury and Phil Coulson, and ultimately the tie-in to that Pager Fury started at the end of Avengers: Infinity War.  This film is a first rate effort by Marvel to introduce what may fans know is one of the most powerful heroes in the entire Marvel Universe.

The start of the movie begins with Danvers in training on the Kree home world of Hala.  She quickly finds herself in the middle of an ambush setup by the Skrull on planet Torfa.  This finds her captured by the Skrull army where she is integrated by Talos.  During an escape attempt Danvers finds herself on earth and unraveling the mystery of her past.  This leads into an interaction with S.H.I.E.L.D. and a young Fury that sets the path putting Danvers in the middle of the Kree – Skrull war that has been raging for centuries.  While Danvers unravels the truth about how she gained her powers the Kree are secretly working to gain the Tesseract.  When Danvers was just human, she was a test pilot and during an accident where her plan was shot down by the Kree, in a moment of self sacrifice attempts to destroy the classified light drive that is in the crashed ship, yet instead of just destroying it the power of the drive is absorbed into Danvers.  This begins to explain why Captain Marvel is so powerful; she is powered by the Space Stone.  Danvers and Furry manage to form an alliance with the Skrull on earth once she realizes the Kree have been lying and manipulating her the entire time.  They are able to locate a secrete ship orbiting earth that contains several refugees of the Skrulls.  Danvers is able to beat back the Kree war ships that come to earth to collect the Tesseract, currently being protected by the Skrulls and Shield alliance.

If you have seen the film, comment below on your favorite part of the movie.  For us at 812review it was everything containing Goose the cat, or should we say Goose the Flerken.  After reading the comics, you already know what is going to happen and the payoff is amazing well done.  There is several other great moments such as the throwback to BlockBuster, Budapest reference by Furry,  and the movies take on the Supreme Intelligence.  We are certainly looking forward to the sequel, and catching Captain Marvel appearing in other Marvel films.
